After a fire on Sunday, a new report reveals extensive damage to the building.
The Harlem Nights Resort project is located in the historic west side of Las Vegas and has recently suffered significant damage due to a fire. The site, previously home to the Tokyo Casino and New City Bar, caught fire on Sunday, as reported by the Las Vegas Fire Department. While not registered as a historical landmark, the location has recently garnered interest from a developer named 'Harlem Nights.'
According to reports, the former Tokyo Casino caught fire on Sunday afternoon after 6 p.m. Firefighters quickly responded to the corner of Jackson Street and Avenue F. By 8 p.m., the firefighters had extinguished the blaze. Unfortunately, the site has sustained substantial damage. The building is deemed a 'total loss' by the Las Vegas Fire Department, implying that redevelopment might not be feasible, and the burned structure might need to be demolished.
Discussions about the proposed project continue. Lisa Mayo-Deriso, the project consultant for Harlem Nights, revealed that the company plans to demolish the existing building based on the proposed project. The initial features of the project included a 60-story high-rise building. After receiving notices, the company is aware that some taller buildings regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration might impact the area's aviation industry.
As Harlem Nights contemplates the demolition of the building, it plans to execute the plan more respectfully considering its historical heritage. Regarding the recent fire, Mayo-Deriso expressed disappointment at the irreversible loss caused by it. Additionally, she stated that Harlem Nights is requesting a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
As of now, the Tokyo Casino Fire Department has not determined the cause of the fire and has not specified when more details will be released. It remains unclear whether the fire was accidental or intentional.
Reportedly, a community discussion about the Harlem Nights project will take place next week. According to Mayo-Deriso, the project will also be debated at the Las Vegas City Planning Commission on November 14, 2023.
Tensions between casino operators and employees have recently led to the establishment of highly coordinated picket lines in other parts of Las Vegas. Meanwhile, negotiations between unions and casino operators have seen 'no real progress,' as workers protest the rising cost of living and inflation. |
