A $9.5 billion jackpot, and the wife is taken to court by her husband because of something she did!
Winning the jackpot can actually be quite troublesome. Why do I say that? Let's take a look at what happened today in the state of Maine, USA. A husband has taken his wife to court, not over property disputes, but because of something the wife did.
Is it all because of winning the lottery? Here's the story: a man in Maine won a whopping $1.35 billion in January this year. He decided to take the prize in a lump sum, but that meant he had to pay a huge amount of taxes, approximately $723.56 million. As a result, the man ended up with just over $500 million.
After winning, the man wanted to keep it a secret, so he only told his wife about this tremendous piece of good news. To prevent the news from leaking, the man even signed a confidentiality agreement in February, requiring his wife to keep the winning a secret until their daughter turns 18.
However, the man discovered in September 2023 that his parents already knew about his jackpot, and not only that, even his sister was aware of the news. It turns out that his wife had revealed the good news to his parents through at least three phone conversations. Enraged, the man felt that his wife had seriously violated the confidentiality agreement they had previously signed.
Furious, the man ultimately decided to sue his wife, accusing her of breaching the confidentiality agreement. He is seeking a court order to prohibit his wife from disclosing the lottery win again. Well, is it really that serious? Perhaps the wife was just unable to contain the joy of winning and shared it with the man's parents. It's not like she told anyone else. Sharing the joy with her own parents and sister seems reasonable, doesn't it? Going to court over this seems like burning money unnecessarily, doesn't it?! |
