Danish football is not considered a top-tier team globally, and the Danish football league has often been underestimated. However, after Copenhagen from the Danish league successfully defeated Galatasaray from the Turkish Super Lig to advance to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, the Copenhagen coach expressed excitement and even mocked those who had previously underestimated the Danish team.
In the Champions League group stage, Copenhagen faced strong opponents: Bundesliga's Bayern Munich, Premier League's Manchester United, and Galatasaray from the Turkish Super Lig. While Bayern lived up to expectations by securing the top spot in the group, Manchester United unexpectedly finished last due to various internal and external issues. This left Copenhagen and Galatasaray competing for the sole remaining spot in the Round of 16. Ultimately, Copenhagen triumphed with a 1-0 victory, marking the second time a Danish club has reached the Champions League Round of 16 since the 2010-11 season and creating history.
After confirming their place in the Round of 16, Copenhagen announced free beer for all fans at the stadium that night. The coach, Jess Thorup, and the players celebrated enthusiastically in the dressing room. In an interview, Thorup expressed his excitement: "What should I say? We did it again! Second place in the group is well-deserved because I truly believe we proved to be the second-best team in the group over the six matches; the standings don't lie. Therefore, I am happy and proud on behalf of the players, fans, and every corner of Copenhagen. This means a lot for Danish football." He further mentioned that Turkish teams had always underestimated them, but after this victory, Turkish teams should rethink how to defeat them.
