Manchester United faced a do-or-die battle in the final match of the UEFA Champions League group stage at their home ground. Unfortunately, the outcome was an undisputed loss, resulting in their elimination at the bottom of the group, even missing out on the Europa League. In the midst of this predicament, manager Ten Hag surprisingly expressed optimism, stating that not participating in European competitions could be a good thing for the team.

Prior to the match against Bayern Munich, expectations for Manchester United were already low. The 0-1 defeat wasn't a shock, considering the current state of the team, which falls significantly short of top European powerhouses like Bayern. While exiting the group stage was anticipated, it was harder for fans to accept that Manchester United couldn't even overcome teams like Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

Despite widespread disappointment, Manager Ten Hag, rather than seeing it as a setback, viewed the absence of European competition as an opportunity for Manchester United to easily secure a spot in the Premier League's top four. This season has been below expectations in both the league and the Champions League, largely due to numerous injuries. With 30 recorded instances of player injuries or illnesses so far, Ten Hag believes that reducing the number of matches can help control injuries. Focusing on one competition at a time could make Manchester United stronger and increase their chances of securing a top-four finish.

However, some fans criticized the notion that a club of Manchester United's stature should not be content with just securing a top-four finish in the league while being eliminated from the Champions League group stage. They argued that Ten Hag should demonstrate more coaching prowess, questioning the value of reaching the top four in the league if the team can't even advance from the Champions League group stage. They suggested that Ten Hag shouldn't make such statements, considering the potential challenges in the next season's Champions League.

Speechless. Eliminated and still claiming it's not embarrassing?

He used to be humble, but now he's bragging. I think Ten Hag might be on the verge of getting sacked.

I don't know who finds it hard to accept that Manchester United lost to Galatasaray and Copenhagen. Teams making it to the Champions League group stage often have the strength of mid-table or relegation-threatened clubs in the top five leagues. If Manchester United can lose to Bournemouth in the league, why can't they lose to Champions League opponents? Is it expected that others should just lose to them? Copenhagen managed to draw Bayern away and narrowly lost at home, conceding only two goals in two matches. How many goals did Manchester United concede in two games against Bayern? So, those who believe Manchester United can easily win – do they really watch football? Do they truly understand the game?

A coach expressing such an attitude towards the UEFA Champions League essentially signals a lack of ambition and forward-thinking mindset. A coach without the will to strive for higher goals is a burden to the team. It's unclear how Manchester United's management is handling the situation. If they continue with poor performance, it may become challenging to attract top-tier coaches in the future, even if they decide to make a coaching change.

I believe that the head coach of a top club should have higher aspirations beyond just securing a top-four finish in the league. The UEFA Champions League is the ultimate stage for elite clubs, and missing out on this opportunity could impact the team's reputation and attractiveness.
