Every dynasty faces a decline; last season's treble-winning Manchester City now shows signs of decline. Extensive injuries have weakened them, and in the last 6 Premier League games, they only managed one win, hitting a new low under Guardiola. Is this the end of City's dominance?
In a surprising turn, City, despite being two goals ahead, drew with Crystal Palace at home. They now trail league leaders Liverpool by three points, having played an extra game. Criticism for City has surged as people are shocked by the rapid decline of the team that clinched a treble just last season.
However, if we examine the issue closely, City's fluctuating performance this season is quite normal. They faced three BIG6 teams in just six matches, including Chelsea, Liverpool, and Spurs, drawing with all of them. Their difficult schedule is a major reason for their struggle to secure wins. Yet, it cannot mask the fact that City has indeed lost its dominance.
City's decline is primarily due to a multitude of suspensions, injuries, and the departure of key players like Mahrez and Gundogan. For instance, against Crystal Palace, City was without key players like Haaland, De Bruyne, Stones, and Doku. Losing crucial players like Rodri in previous matches has also contributed to City's loss of dominance.
While City seems to have slipped, it's too early to count them out. Despite recent struggles, City has a history of late-season surges, capable of securing 15 consecutive wins. Even Liverpool's Klopp stated that considering City out of the title race would be foolish. So, there's reason to believe City can bounce back; they've done it before, more than once. |
