Being a soccer coach is undoubtedly one of the most high-pressure jobs in the world, as the team's victories and defeats determine the extent of praise or criticism one receives. However, despite the immense pressure on soccer coaches, their work usually doesn't endanger their lives or their family's safety. Nevertheless, exceptions exist, and former Chelsea head coach Potter, who had a series of winless matches, revealed in a previous interview that he and his children received death threats.
Potter transitioned from coaching at the small club Brighton to Chelsea after being recruited by owner Abramovich. The shift from a small to a big club is significant. Not only is the scale of the fanbase different, but the expectations for performance are also more stringent compared to his time at a smaller club. During his time at Brighton, Potter's goal was simply to avoid relegation, so occasional back-to-back losses were more acceptable in that context. However, at Chelsea, even a draw is unsatisfactory for a top club, let alone a loss. Under Potter's leadership, Chelsea has only won two out of the last 14 Premier League matches, a performance that is far from satisfying.
Moreover, the funds provided to Potter for the team are abundant. As previously discussed, Chelsea set record-breaking transfer fees this winter, so Potter's current performance is obviously disappointing. Some fans even claim that Potter is the worst coach in Chelsea's history, and many have called for his dismissal. Unfortunately, some irrational fans even sent a death threat letter to Potter and his child, stating that if he doesn't resign, both he and his child would be in danger.
Contrary to the calls from fans to dismiss Potter, Chelsea's official stance has consistently been protective of him, asserting that he is the right long-term plan and that they won't change coaches. After Potter received death threats, Chelsea strongly condemned the extreme action of the fans and announced their intention to investigate the matter. |
