December 22 News: Today, The Athletic reporter Mike Vorkunov released a long article, stating that the last three years of the contract for New Orleans Pelicans player Zion Williamson are no longer guaranteed.
However, there are ways for Zion to regain partial or even full salary guarantees:
- If he passes all six weight check indicators in the 24-25 season, 20% of his salary in the 25-26 season will be guaranteed again.
- If he participates in at least 41 games in the 24-25 season, an additional 40% will be guaranteed again.
- If he participates in at least 51 games in the 24-25 season, an additional 20% will be guaranteed again.
- If he participates in at least 61 games, the final 20% will also be guaranteed again.
He can also regain partial guarantees for the salaries in the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons by achieving the same milestones in subsequent seasons.
In addition, as long as the Pelicans do not dismiss him before January 8, 2025, his contract for the 24-25 season will be fully guaranteed.
As long as he is not dismissed before July 15, 2025, his contract for the 2025-26 season will be fully guaranteed.
As long as he is not dismissed before July 15, 2026, his contract for the 2026-27 season will be fully guaranteed.
If Zion does not meet certain standards in regular weight and body fat checks, he faces the risk of losing more guarantees. According to the contract, the sum of Zion's weight and body fat percentage must be less than 295. Last season, he was listed at a weight of 285 pounds, meaning his body fat cannot exceed 10%.
The Pelicans have also taken protective measures in the contract to prevent any further significant issues with Zion's right fifth metatarsal. If his right fifth metatarsal fractures or suffers stress injury, or is related to previous injuries, then if the team dismisses him, half of his basic salary for the 24-25 season will no longer be guaranteed. |
