With Jokic securing the NBA championship last season and his impressive accolades, discussions about his historical standing have emerged. Currently holding two MVP awards and one FMVP award, some are starting to debate whether Jokic has surpassed Giannis Antetokounmpo and entered the top twenty players in NBA history.
This season, even without considering his awards, Jokic's performance in both the regular season and the playoffs speaks for itself. Throughout the playoffs, Jokic played 20 games, recording 10 triple-doubles with averages of 39.4 minutes, 30 points, 13.5 rebounds, 9.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1 block per game. In the regular season, he played 69 games with averages of 33.7 minutes, 24.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 9.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game. While he narrowly missed averaging a triple-double, his current stats are already historically outstanding, making him the league's top player this season.
After winning the FMVP, people began discussing Jokic's historical standing. Given that Jokic already holds two MVP awards and one FMVP award, some argue that he has solidified his place among the top twenty players in NBA history. When looking at NBA history as a whole, there have been only about ten players who have won two MVPs and one FMVP, so Jokic's inclusion in this list is not surprising. Giannis Antetokounmpo, also a two-time MVP and one-time FMVP winner, faced controversy regarding a stepping incident during the finals, and the debate over their rankings continues. However, some believe that Jokic has a higher ranking than Giannis.
The Denver Nuggets, with Jokic, have a well-rounded roster, and their age structure aligns with the prime years of their players. They only need minor reinforcements to remain strong contenders for the championship next year. In contrast, the Milwaukee Bucks, where Giannis plays, had a disappointing season, falling victim to an upset, which significantly affected their morale. In the long run, Jokic's chances of entering the top ten in history may be higher than Giannis's because the Nuggets are still on the rise and have not reached their peak. An evolved Jokic, paired with Murray, could become even more formidable.
So, whether Jokic can break into the top ten in history will depend on whether he can lead his team to another championship. If he can secure another NBA championship and FMVP, along with explosive average statistics, then entering the top ten in history is entirely within reach for him. |
