In the third and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia's Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who bowled with the new ball, dismissed both of Pakistan's openers for ducks in their opening overs. Captain Pat Cummins then removed Babar Azam and Shaud Shakeel, leaving Pakistan reeling. Shan Masood, the captain, and Muhammad Rizwan met to ensure that no more damage would occur until the end of the first session. Mitchell Marsh claimed Pakistan's captain Masood during the second session, but Rizwan carried on with his merrymaking to reach a well-earned half-century. Shan Masood, the captain of Pakistan, had earlier won the toss and elected to bat.
