During the two-Test series against South Africa, the Indian team management made a change in strategy by promoting Shubman Gill to No. 3 and bringing in Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma to open the innings. Gill at one down and Shreyas Iyer at No. 4 was a sign of a new guard, as India decided to go past Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. However, if the initial Test conducted at Centurion serves as any indication, then further testing is necessary. Gill appeared strong during his 26-run innings before being bowled by Marco Jansen, but he was out for two in the opening over.
