After the announcement of the formation of the European Super League last year, it faced widespread opposition from numerous European teams and fans. Despite the initial involvement of many top clubs, the overwhelming backlash led to the majority of them withdrawing from the Super League within just two days, marking the league's failure. However, some teams remained unwilling to give up, and now the European Super League sees a glimmer of revival. Yet, will things really go smoothly?
Since its announcement, the European Super League has encountered substantial opposition, with official statements from top leagues in various countries expressing their disapproval of its establishment. They threatened domestic teams and players, stating that any team daring to participate in the Super League would be expelled from their country's domestic league. UEFA also declared that any team or player involved in the Super League would be banned from participating in UEFA competitions. Fans across different countries took to the streets to protest against their teams' participation in the Super League.
As a result of the pressure, the initial members of the European Super League, including the BIG6 from the English Premier League, withdrew within just two days. Currently, only Real Madrid and Barcelona persist in trying to establish the Super League. Seeing the Super League on the verge of collapse, these two clubs actively cooperated with the organizers and decided to interpret UEFA's ban as a form of monopolistic practice. They appealed to the European Court of Justice and surprisingly succeeded. The European Court of Justice ruled that UEFA's decision to ban teams and players from participating in the Super League was a form of monopolistic practice, violating EU law. Consequently, UEFA can no longer use the same argument to threaten teams and players.
Following the ruling by the European Court of Justice, Real Madrid and Barcelona released statements, calling it a "new era" and a form of progress. However, UEFA maintained its opposition to the Super League, asserting that the court's decision did not mean they fully supported its establishment. They pledged to continue opposing the Super League in different ways. The majority of European football teams, whether top-tier or lower-tier, immediately issued statements after the ruling, expressing their ongoing resistance to the Super League. They indicated their commitment to stand with UEFA. Currently, despite the legal clearance, the success of the Super League remains highly unlikely, as nearly the entire European football community opposes it. Only Real Madrid and Barcelona, unable to carry the weight of the entire European football, seem to be in favor of the Super League. |
