Solana Co-founder: Solana's core focus is on expanding Layer 1, and Layer 2 solutions are optional.
On January 5th, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko expressed his views on whether Solana needs Layer 2 solutions. Yakovenko pointed out that while there are no technical barriers preventing developers from creating Layer 2 solutions on Solana, the primary goal of Solana is to synchronize the global atomic state machine as quickly as possible within the limits allowed by the laws of physics.
In this ultimate state, any Layer 2, sidechain, or zero-knowledge proof like Valadium is an external execution environment that cannot guarantee an atomic combination with the Layer 1 state. Although technologies like sidechains, data availability verification bridges, and zero-knowledge proofs like Valadium are innovative and popular, they do not extend the global atomic state machine.
Therefore, the question of whether Solana needs Layer 2 solutions may not be entirely applicable or significant. Solana is currently focused on continuing to directly expand Layer 1 and enhancing individual virtual machine instances on Layer 1, which may be achievable in the future through hardware upgrades. |
