In a special economic zone called Próspera in Roatán, Honduras, Bitcoin has been officially recognized as a unit of account. This means that Bitcoin can now be used to measure the market value of goods and services. The development was led by Jorge Colindres, the tax commissioner of the Próspera Employment and Economic Development Zone (ZEDE), on January 5th. Colindres mentioned that due to technical limitations in their electronic governance system, along with some external regulatory issues, the "final Bitcoin tax procedure" cannot be implemented at the moment.
Individuals intending to use Bitcoin as a unit of account must submit a notice to the tax committee of Próspera within 30 days after the relevant tax period expires. |
