The French National Sports Agency (ANJ) is taking significant measures to improve and clarify the framework for sports betting on approved sporting events in the country. This initiative includes detailed modifications to the existing list, aiming to enhance consensus and understanding among stakeholders and gambling enthusiasts.
Recently, ANJ announced the removal of 179 sporting events from its list of approved betting events. This modification comes after a comprehensive review of the current list, which has been regularly updated since 2010. The decision to revise the list was made due to concerns about the readability and consistency of previous versions over time.
ANJ collaborates with key institutions such as the French Ministry of Sports, the Olympic and Paralympic Committees, the French Sports Federation, leagues, and gambling operators to ensure comprehensive and timely information flow. The goal is not only to eliminate confusion but also to establish a more transparent and secure framework for the sports betting industry in France.
The exclusion of the 179 sporting events was not arbitrary but based on careful assessments according to legal standards and relevance. Some events were excluded due to a lack of significance, such as a first-tier football match in Armenia. Meanwhile, other events faced manipulation risks, like the Tunisian first-tier football championship and US college sports games, resulting in their removal. However, the finals of the popular March Madness basketball tournament were approved and retained on the list.
Conversely, the revised list includes several reinstated matches, including friendly matches for the French men's football and rugby teams. Additionally, some restrictions on betting types, such as prohibiting tennis handicap bets and banning player scoring bets in basketball games, were lifted.
The latest list comprises 772 approved betting events, set to take effect on March 1 of this year. To ensure ongoing relevance and effectiveness, ANJ plans a comprehensive review of the list at the end of the year, engaging in consultations with all relevant stakeholders. This proactive action reflects ANJ's commitment to maintaining the integrity of sports betting while adapting to the evolving landscape of sports events and consumer preferences. |
