The first day of the subcontinental Tests is when the pacers work the hardest because the spinners receive very little help. Even so, only 14 overs of pace were used on Day 1 (12 by India and 2 by England). The pacers were not a big part of India's bowling strategy at the beginning of England's second innings on Saturday. However, the Bazball strategy was effective for England because of the way their batters timed their shots to throw the spinners off-balance. Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett, and Zak Crawley, the openers, all scored quickly. By the beginning of the 18th over, England had erased 100 of the 190-run lead at a pace of almost six runs per over.
