"When you see the title, I guess everyone can figure out which team you're talking about, and it's Brazil, of course. Since Brazil won the World Cup in 2002, they've participated in 5 World Cups. Each time, Brazil has been considered a strong contender to win the tournament, with people often highlighting the high market values and the world-class forwards, defenders, and midfielders they have.
However, out of these 5 World Cups, Brazil has only reached the semi-finals once and finished fourth. In the other four occasions, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals. They were defeated by teams like the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, and in 2022, even Croatia, a European team, managed to upset them. It feels like whenever Brazil faces a European team, they are destined to lose. I wonder if they'll develop a fear of European teams in the future.
On paper, the Brazilian team looks very strong, filled with world-class and top-notch players. However, their actual performances in these tournaments have been far from impressive. A squad like this, which was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Croatia, is quite surprising.
Anyone who watched the games knows that Brazil's defeats were not undeserved. They looked lackluster, complacent, and lacked the fighting spirit you'd expect in a World Cup. Neymar, who is often considered one of the top three forwards in the world, was dispossessed 21 times and had a low success rate in dribbling. He seemed more focused on flashy skills than on delivering results.
Perhaps this was Neymar's last World Cup, and he seemed to be aware of it as he shed tears after the match. In true competitive sports, having a high market value and flashy skills isn't enough to win. You need a practical mindset, effective tactics, and the ability to perform when it matters most.
