The ex-coach of India, Ravi Shastri, has raised doubts over the selection of fast bowler Mukesh Kumar over spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar in India’s team for the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam. Shastri voiced his concerns about the inclusion of fast bowler Mukesh Kumar in the Indian team, while commentating during the first session of the 2nd Test, especially since the team chose to bat first on the Vizag surface. The former India coach challenged the tactical decision, implying that spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar could have been a better option given India’s batting troubles in the absence of Ravindra Jadeja. "My only concern is picking Mukesh Kumar over Washington Sundar. How much of use will Mukesh be, especially after India is batting first on this Vizag surface" adding Washington Sundar to the team, India would have benefited from another spinner as well as a stronger batting lineup. His bounce and variety make it difficult for the English batsmen to play sweep shots against him. Sundar played his last Test against England in 2021, where he took a wicket and scored 96 runs, his best performance in Test cricket.
