Disney is considering establishing a closer licensing partnership with gaming operators through its sports broadcasting giant ESPN. According to reports, ESPN is currently in negotiations with sports betting giants such as Caesars Entertainment and DraftKings, seeking to sell brand licenses. This would be a multi-year licensing agreement with a cost of at least $3 billion.
ESPN has already reached agreements with some gambling operators, allowing them to regularly display point spreads and other betting lines during games; another Disney-owned company, ABC, has adopted similar practices in some sports programs. In addition, ESPN has launched a special program called "Daily Wager," focusing on sports gambling.
When asked whether ESPN would license its name to the gaming companies and fully integrate gaming operations into ESPN, Disney CEO Bob Chapek expressed disagreement.
He stated, "There's a long way to go between embedding the gaming business into the ESPN business model and obtaining a license." All we can say is that our fans are very interested in sports gambling. Our partners (various sports leagues) may also be interested in sports gambling. So we are very interested in sports gambling. |
