February 16th News: Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob spoke to The Athletic.
Regarding Steve Kerr's contract extension, Lacob said, "Steve Kerr has been with us for 10 years. Another thing about our team is continuity. Look at those teams that change their 'big three' every year; they don't win championships. Continuity is important... Steve has been here for 10 years, and he is one of the greatest coaches in NBA history. I think we will reach an agreement with him. He is a very fair person, and we never underpay anyone. We always pay handsomely; we are fair. What we have to do is what's good for the overall team business, obviously... I think he does want to continue coaching this team in the future. And we want him to stay, that's clear. We think he's a great coach."
"Everyone criticizes Kerr's player development issues, you know, 'he doesn't let players develop' and such, maybe there was some truth to that in the past, but this year you can't say that. For whatever reason, we have a large number of very talented young players. Our bench is performing very well. Kerr should be praised..."
"I think we'll sign the contract with Kerr soon... He's been very busy. He's coaching this team, we've had issues, and he had to focus on that. We all understand that. He's a very respectable person, and I respect him a lot. We'll try to reach an agreement that he'll be very happy with, and we'll be satisfied too. I'm not too worried about this issue. I don't think there's anyone else who can have Steve Kerr as their coach." |
